Breaking Barriers: A Graduate's Journey to Discovering His True Passion in Finance

Interviewed by Gillian Chen, YCP Student Committee Member

Richard just graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in Accounting. He had always been a hard-working student, and was eager to put his newly acquired knowledge and skills to the test in the real world.

After graduation, Richard landed his first job as an administrative assistant at a small financial firm. Over the 5 years, Richard worked his way up the ladder, taking on new roles as an accountant and eventually as a wealth manager. It was an exciting time for Richard as he learned more about the finance industry and developed his research abilities and judgment.

However, despite his successes, Richard began to feel a sense of restlessness. He felt like he was missing something, like there was a deeper purpose that he was not fulfilling. Richard began to question whether he was truly passionate about his work, or whether he was just following a career path that he thought was expected of him. One day, Richard realized that he had been limiting himself, and that there were many other career paths he could explore.

Over the next few months, Richard continued to reflect on his career goals and aspirations. He realized that passion was more important than weighing strengths and weaknesses, and that it was essential to pursue work that he truly loved. With newfound determination, Richard began to tailor his job searching process and taking the time to meet the requirements of each job he applied for.

After some time, Richard landed a job in investment management, where he could pursue his passion for thinking outside of the box to measure the positives and negatives of companies. Richard finally felt like he had found his calling, and he could not be happier.

He creatively examined the company's statistics when analysing the investment decision. He presented his opinions on the state of the company using his excellent data analysis skills. His aptitude for balancing business opportunities and risks demonstrated his excellent work ethic.

Looking back on his journey, Richard realized that it was his willingness to take risks and step outside of his comfort zone that allowed him to discover his passion. He learned to be patient and not limit himself in his job seeking journey, and he embraced the hunger to pursue his dreams. Richard hoped to one day inspire others to find their own passions and pursue them with determination and perseverance.
